Experiences of POROI Alumni

"One of the courses that I teach repeatedly is the Composition for Teachers course, and I often go through many of the steps we went through in the POROI courses–recognizing the style of the writer, the arrangement, memory and delivery. And most of all, I had no real experience in this until I enrolled in POROI classes. I guess we do “surface” examinations of author’s styles, etc., in education, but the intensity of examining their writing opened my eyes so much to what each was attempting to accomplish and how that was accomplished. It seems to permeate my teaching today in ways of which I am not even aware. I believe that my writing, my teaching, and my speaking have been made better through the POROI program. Someone once asked me at a Faculty Senate meeting how I was able to get to the point so quickly, and I think much of that has been due to your program."

"I think the work I did for the graduate certificate has had a positive effect on my career.... It seemed to me then that the faculty involved with POROI took a greater interest in the work of students who were not ‘their' students than did the faculty in my department with graduate students whose committees they did not serve on...My research is in the subfield of political rhetoric, and were it not for POROI, I doubt that I would have had much training in rhetoric."
