Building a Nation in Blood: Irish Patriots' Self and Social Justifications of Violence
Bruce Gronbeck, Communications Studies
"This is a study currently in progress on justifications for martyrdom and bloodshed that mid-19th-century Irish patriots used when jailed or when sentenced. I am analyzing the over- and under-valuation of blood in their speeches, other Western examples of personal sacrifice and bloodshed in the name of nation-building, and relationships between Irish and Islamic jihadist arguments for sacrifice and violence."
